Lighthouses remind me of my mom. She likes them so much that she bought a mini lighthouse to put in our yard that actually had a light that shined. 
But without lighthouses, ships would be lost when it came to trying to find a port in the dark or in stormy whether. And think of how God's Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Without His Word, we really wouldn't have a clue how to navigate the trials of this life. But as it says in James, we are meant to navigate them with joy in our hearts. "Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire, lacking nothing."
